Professor in Robust, Digital-intensive Electronic Circuits for Radiation Environments

KU Leuven has a full-time academic vacancy in the Advanced Integrated Sensing Lab (ADVISE) research lab at the Geel Campus. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent [interdisciplinary] research record and with educational competencies within the field of electronics. The appointment will be made in the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) and Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven. The ADVISE research group is located at the Geel campus of KU Leuven. The research within ADVISE focuses on the development of robust and radiant hardened electronics. The research group is internationally recognized for its expertise in modeling and design of integrated electronic circuits that withstand very high radiation doses. Such components are widely applied in current and future nuclear (fission and fusion) reactors (e.g. ITER), in high-energy physics experiments (e.g. installed on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN), in aerospace, aeronautics, medical imaging, nuclear safety, etc. The group is a member of the global CMS Collaboration at CERN (CMS is, in addition to ATLAS, one of the two biggest experiments linked to the LHC). ADVISE also has a structural cooperation with the ESAT-MICAS research division.

You will develop a research programme of international level in the field of fast, robust and radiation hardened digital integrated systems and mixed analog-digital circuits for applications in extreme radiation environments. Possible research topics are the development of new techniques for clock and data recovery circuits, digital PLLs (Phase-Locked Loops), radiation hardened digital design and soft-error tolerant implementations, digital calibration techniques for mixed analog-digital systems, robust memories, time-based signal processing blocks, high-performance microprocessors and radiation-hard FPGA systems.

You work on electronic systems for data communication, instrumentation and digital signal processing in challenging applications such as high-energy physics experiments, nuclear reactors, management and transport of nuclear waste, aeronautics and aerospace and medical (nuclear) imaging. You have the necessary knowledge for conceptual design, implementation and experimental verification of these systems in ionizing radiation facilities and have passed through the design cycle of radiation hardened integrated and components.

You support and develop radiation experiments for both research projects and collaborations with industrial partners. You will also develop electronic solutions to support other research groups on campus. You strengthen the lab by attracting or acquiring additional research lab equipment and infrastructure.

You will ensure international cooperation with academic partners, supervise PhD and master students and generate scientific output that meets the highest international standards.  You strive for excellence in research and thus contribute to the further development of the ADVISE research group. You work closely with the other ADVISE researchers to support ongoing research projects and to set up future research projects.

You will engage in applied research through bothpublic funding and local and international partnerships with various industrialpartners (including SMEs) through projects and services. You pay the required attention to tech transfer and the application of the results of your research in industry/government/society.

You provide high-quality education for both bachelor and master students in the field of analogue and digital systems and embedded electronics in the Bachelor and Master of science in engineering technology - Electronics-ICT, Electromechanics and Energy in the Faculty of Engineering Technology at Geel Campus with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole.

You contribute to the facultys and the universitys pedagogical project through the supervision of student projects (for example bachelors and masters theses) and by acting as a supervisor of PhD students.

You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuvens views on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Your teaching duties are determined in agreement and are based on your specific profile. The scope is limited in the first years of your appointment. All professors are expected to teach a few basic undergraduate courses. In your further career, the faculty will also pay a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.

You are prepared to provide services to the scientific community, to society and to the university in function of the needs and your personal interests.

You maintain close contact with the local industry.

You play an active part in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events and fairs,...

You hold a degree of Master of Science in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent degree, and a PhD where the subject of your doctoral thesis relates to the research field.

You have a strong research track record in the discipline, evidenced by your publications or by your research experience in industry. You have the ambition to contribute to the valorisation of research in industry and in society. International experience is an important advantage.

You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.

You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership competencies in a university or industry context.

A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of your employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.

Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch resp. English to the required standard.

We offer full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment.

KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally orientated university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. Our university is highly focused on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and strives for international excellence. In this regard, the university actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad and provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.

For your research and teaching assignments you will mainly work at the KU Leuven Geel Campus. This campus is one of the operational sites of the KU Leuven multi-campus Faculty of Engineering Technology situated about 45 km North-East of Leuven.
