Signal Processing Firmware Team Lead

Signal Processing Firmware Team Lead is a key role for the signal path development for Implantable Hearing Solutions. Signal path for our Smart implants are increasingly important and this is a key position leading both the team and projects in this complex space.

Based in Mechelen, the Cochlear Technology Centre is Cochlears largest Research & Development department outside Australia. Our enthusiastic colleagues work in a multidisciplinary setting to develop new technologies, products and manufacturing processes that will be used to develop new ground-breaking hearing implant systems. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing Signal Processing Firmware Team deliverables against targets
  • Ensure there is a clear vision on signal processing for Smart Implants
  • Capture learnings from field products and translate into improvements
  • Align signal processing technology development with long term roadmap directions.
  • Ensure lead technical firmware expertise is available within the team for team projects.
  • Ensure team contributions to project goals are adequate in terms of work breakdown, specification and firmware requirements.
  • Ensure the required resources are available to execute the work in the projects.
  • Execute firmware implementation plans within the team; managing and allocating resources, distributing/reviewing tasks by team member and aligning by project schedule.
  • Execute verification and validation plans within the team; managing, distributing and reviewing tasks by team member and by project schedule.
  • Continuously review all firmware team tasks and team member allocation for alignment with priorities, processes, quality and short- and long-term D&D project plans
  • Provide reports and updates of progress to the firmware group leader, department manager, and/or relevant (system) project manager as required.
  • Ensure firmware and D&D development methodologies are followed.
  • Contribute to discussions regarding firmware projects and systems across the company.

Managing Signal processing Firmware Team Development and Processes

  • Champion firmware expertise and mentor team members to achieve the same.
  • Champion firmware verification and validation methods and continuous improvement.
  • Champion firmware implementation and methodology best practice.
  • Ensure firmware development processes are defined, documented and followed by the team.  These processes may be part of PIP and/or specific firmware processes.
  • Continuously review and further develop firmware processes and methodologies.
  • Delivering outcomes through processes and methodologies.

 Firmware Technology

  • Champion firmware innovation and IP generation
  • Review and/or apply upcoming and new international standards relating to firmware design, technologies, implementation or methodology.
  • Identify firmware training and improvement opportunities for the team.
  • Ensure firmware tools are up to date and continuously review new tools and techniques.
  • Ensure best practice coding styles and practices are used in the team
  • Contribute to Firmware architecture definition and directions for Cochlear products
  • Find solutions to difficult problems outside the standard solution and able to identify and recommend significant improvements to processes.
  • Provide training and reference / guidance material.

Project Manager

  • Ensure that the projects deliver a coherent, successful sub-system
  • Ensure that trade-offs between projects aim for an optimum outcome
  • Manage the budget, ensure overall spend is within agreed boundaries.
  • Identify and manage risks to system delivery
  • Manage inter-project dependencies; identify key milestones where the projects need to be synchronised, e.g. milestones, technical integration points and regulatory submissions.
  • Ensure that technical integration points are well managed, with clear objectives and measured outcomes.
  • Prepare work breakdown structures and project schedules covering tasks for the firmware team, and coordinate integration of these schedules into overall project management plans.
  • Identify key communication lines between projects and with other departments, (e.g. manufacturing, marketing, quality, regulatory, regions)
  • Ensure effective communication along these lines.
  • Communicate to senior management on project status and key decisions.
  • Identify and manage synergies with other Cochlear projects.
  • Manage multiple stakeholder interests so that the system satisfies stakeholder requirements.
  • Prepare the regulatory filings when required.
  • Ensure ongoing support for existing products.

Key Requirements:

Technical competencies

  • University degree in science or engineering
  • Experience in firmware development, in particular signal processing firmware
  • Experience in leading small teams of engineers
  • Experience in managing all aspects of firmware projects, from requirements gathering up to release verification.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in the English language.
