Postdoctoral Researcher on the Development of Active Elements for Droplet Microfluidics

The job

As part of imecs R&D activities, we focus on the development of novel tools for diagnostic health care applications. Current projects vary from lab-on-a-chip systems and PCR devices to the direct sensing of single-cell biomarkers. Such technologies require a multidisciplinary approach with team members having expertise in molecular biology, surface chemistry, microfluidics and biosensors. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to the development of droplet microfluidic devices. Besides basic functionalities, the aim is to develop novel active components (e.g. sorters, pumps, mixers, etc.) enabling a fully integrated microfluidic droplet platform for life science applications.
In this position, you will:

  • Perform electrical and microfluidic device design and modelling;
  • Select and characterize materials and develop large-area manufacturing processes using imecs cleanroom facility;
  • Troubleshoot processing challenges;
  • Design, fabricate and test demonstration devices with increasing functionality;
  • Automate test setups that include mechanical, electrical and optical components;
  • Design and execute test plans together with application scientists;
  • Bring ideas from concept to proof-of-principle;
  • Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and biologists.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not considered).


You have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or related with a strong background in the development of automated electrical and fluidic systems. You are highly motivated to work in a lab environment daily together with our design engineers and application scientists. It is essential that you are a hands-on person with excellent engineering skills and a personal drive to results. You have experience in automated fluidic handling systems; experience in droplet microfluidics is considered a plus. You have significant experience of developing and optimizing cleanroom processes. You can understand complex problems and apply specialist processing knowledge to solve them.
You are a team player and have good communication skills since you will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of imec researchers, PhD students and industrial researchers. Given the international character of imec, excellent knowledge of English is a must
